The Parish Education committee oversees all activities centered around the teaching of the Word of God at Centennial. These activities include Sunday School, confirmation, Vacation Bible School, and various Bible studies over the course of a year.
Sunday School takes place at 10:00 AM on Sundays from September through May. It is provided for all age groups above three years. Through fourth grade, dedicated teachers expose children to the stories of God in the Old Testament and the miracles of Jesus in the New, largely through storytelling, memorization, and hands-on activities. They learn the Lord's Prayer, the Apostle's Creed, and the Ten Commandments. From fifth grade through high school, teachers help students apply Biblical truths in their daily lives, mainly through discussions, mental exercises, and role-playing. Adult Sunday School and Bible studies tend to focus on the deep meanings of Christian teaching.
Confirmation is a two-year-long intensive study of the application of Christian principles, augmented by church and community service. It takes place when a student reaches seventh grade. Confirmation is designed to help young people make sound, mature decisions during adolescence and beyond.
In addition to its regular activities, the committee has charge of several special events throughout the year, most notibly a family advent wreath project and the children's Sunday School Christmas program in December.
Adult Education Series: Islam and The Christian Response
A new adult series on Islam, entitled The True Nature of Islam and How We as Christians Should Respond will take place during the Sunday School hour beginning February 10. The five-week series will cover a video package called, "Islam: What the West Needs to Know." Every candidate seeking the Presidency of the United States has told us of the grave danger of Islamic terrorism and yet we hear that we have the same religious roots and worship the same God. Which is it? This is an incredibly important issue and we need to be informed! It could well change the world! Join us in the large north Sunday School classroom for FIVE Sunday mornings 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
